Things We Love About CES
These are just a few of the things that make CES a great school. And I'm adding some items to the list from the comments posted.

Of course it needs work in some areas, but that's where the parents come in to play. We have a voice. We should use it.

    PBIS.....a school wide program where positive choices that show respect, responsibility and safety are acknowledged and rewarded on a daily basis

    Student of the MOnth....another school wide program that encourages positive characteristic traits

    1. The PBIS program encourages positive behavior, respect ,responsibility and safety yes and that is a good lesson to teach and reward. But I have observed that the students who continually follow the rules, are over looked frequently as it is expected of them, and alot of emphasis is placed on the students who need encouragement to do better in those areas. I would like to see more emphasis placed on the students educational
      achievements that I feel would provide an incentive for the students to put more effort into their daily school work and help them to strive for excellence. Maybe considered old fashion but I believe that good behavior, respect,and responsibility teaching should begin in the childs home and the child should be rewarded in thier home for good behavior. The schools should be rewarding them for their educational success.

    2. It's unfortunate but understandable that you don't know the students that are acknowledged daily/monthly for their appropriate and expected behaviors. PBIS is just that--a behavior program ---the program is designed to do exactly what you said...acknowledge/notice those students who are responsible, respectful and safe within their environment--it is intended to reward those students who show these traits daily -Educational awards are given out by teachers who choose to do so for students within their classroom. Our all school spell a thon, and reading challenges in the past few years are examples of school wide educational achievements.

    3. I do know of some of the students recognized for PBIS. The spell a thon if I am not mistaken , was a fundraiser (where people paid so much a word if the student spelled it correctly) the students also knew what the words were prior to the contest. That is a fundraiser, not an educational achievement, Spelling bee where the words are not known ahead of time, nor is anyone contributing money is an educational achievement.

    4. I respectfully disagree with that statement. How is it NOT an educational achievement if a child studies for a test and receives a good score, regardless if it's math, spelling, science, etc? By your claim, it's only an achievement if they don't know the content of the test ahead of time. I am not trying to start an argument, I just cannot understand.

      We had children age 3 learning letters, some even writing words, we had students from our special needs programs that worked extremely hard to achieve good scores. Fundraiser or not, these students studied, they were excited about learning, and the scores were terrific...that is a huge educational achievement in my book.

    5. Well everyone,
      It almost time to start 2013-2014 school year.
      Having children in the school district I look forward to the new year. I believe the addition of Mr. Rouleau and the hiring of Mrs. Silvio will upgrade the elementary.
      Already changes have been made to special education program and there will be special Ed teachers at each grade level and another kindergarten teacher was hired to reduce over crowding. I believe he was easy to work with last year at the middle school. Mrs.Silvio knows the teachers, students, and many parents. Together I believe you will have an administrative team that will demonstrate leadership

  2. How about adding the teachers. I haven't met any that haven't been caring and good at their jobs! Mrs. Fitzgerald, Mrs. Mortimer, Mrs. Michaud, Mrs. Falconer and Mrs. McAuliffe come to mind. So far my kids have received excellent education. Not sure if they would be considered behind if tested by another school district though. IMHO my kids are all above average.

  3. I think the preschool and kindergarten Step Up Day is wonderful. It provides parents with necessary information and relieves childrens anxiety about going to school. I also think it is great that we know who our child's teacher is before school lets out for the summer. I have friends in surrounding towns who find out who their childs teacher is just days before school starts.

  4. I will go to my grave saying that were it not for CES and the hard work of many teachers, particularly Marianne Sargent, my son would not be able to read. I will be forever grateful for their commitment to my child.

  5. Wow. The previous comment pretty-much sums up the biggest problem with the Clinton School System in a nutshell--the parents!

    Learning should start at home. It seems too many parents are okay dumping it entirely on the public schools.

    Turn off the TV and read with your own kid.

    2. Carrie...I agree. Mrs. Sargent is a specialized reading teacher. The child most likely had a disability. But as usual people in this town are too quick to judge parents, teachers, etc.

  6. Anyone take a look at the math packet the children entering 4th grade this year have for summer work. There is a multiple amount of math that was never taught in the 3rd grade to these students. 3rd grade math curriculum needs to get a close look, or if not the curriculum then is every teacher on the same plane of teaching math. Children working off cheat sheet times table papers, rather than learning their multiplication tables. Here could be one big reason when children get to middle school they have a difficult time catching up with math.

    1. The entering 4th grade math packet mentioned above contains material that all students in grade 3 have been exposed to. This math packet was developed by the 4th grade teachers with the intention of having students practice, maintain,and be challenged during the summer months. All 3rd graders have been exposed to these skills, it doesn't necessarily mean they understand them and are able to complete them independently. In a math class, there are at least 5 levels of learning going on at the same time....If you feel your child is challenged at completing any part of this packet...take some time to work with them...this is a good opportunity for you to see what your child's strengths and weaknesses are in math.

    2. My child was never "exposed" to long-division. Also some of the multi-step problem solving pages were too difficult for a 9 year old. They were "exposed" to multiplication and division, but changing years to days, hours to minutes, etc. requires a much higher understanding of these concepts.

      Also, this packet was much larger than the packet my older child received. Why is that? It seems unfair.

  7. thank you for your response to the math packet, except you may believe all students were exposed to that work, but I could prove all were not. I am a parent who watched and worked with my child all year, the math taught in my childs third grade class did not expose them to the information in the packet. My child was in an average classroom. We have completed the packet as parents and student working together, but isn't that sad that your solution is the parent does the work the teacher should have done. I have other experiences in the Elementary school, and honestly the above response is the normal response you get from the Elementary administration whenever you try to point out or assist them in gaining any knowledge of where they might need to improve.

    1. How did your child do on all the interim assessments? Did you communicate to the teacher, the math department chair or the admin. your concerns? Did your child do the weekly open reponse questions and get scored? My child was not doing well and I spoke to the math department chair. She was well versed and helped my child succeed.

    2. Oh yes I had constant contact with the teacher and the administration throughout the year concerning the criteria being taught in my childs classroom, and got in my opinion no resolution. Even requested my child be moved to another classroom and was refused. I have talked with other parents of 3rd grade students and the criteria and teaching methods were totally different in their childs classrooms. So maybe on paper all classrooms were to cover the same curriculum, but the teaching methods certainly were not the same.

  9. Anyone know if there has been a business manager hired or an assitant vice principal of the middle school hired. Also anyone know this answer - Who works in the schools in the summer is there someone there all the time during the summer?

  11. Hi, you can call the school to get the latest information, but when I met with Mr Ingano (which was about a month ago), there was no one hired for the business manager position. A committee was formed to look at applicants and they were narrowing the choices down, but no decision had been made yet. This may have changed since then.

    Also, I believe a new supply list has been posted on the home page of the CES website.

    But you should definitely call the school with any questions having to do with inidividual circumstances, questions, or concerns.

  12. Hello, I also posted this in the CMS area...Try looking on the teacher's individual page for supply lists. I was able to find updated lists (specific to the teacher) for 2 of my children. Both were dated for 2012, one was 2012-2013, so I assume this is an updated list. I know it is not there for every teacher, but hope it helps some get the info they are looking for.

  14. So there is no more ART in CES? I was under the understanding that the Elementary Art teacher was going to do both Elementary and Middle School grade 4. NOT SO?

  15. The Elementary art teacher did the art special for CES & 4th grade at CMS for the past 2 years (since the 4th grade move to CMS). However, that was one of the positions lost (cut) with the budget. There is no longer an art teacher at CES. However, I believe that 4th grade still has art as a special, being taught by a CMS teacher. I can't recall where I heard that, so I could be wrong...anyone know for sure?

  16. Correct, Amy, there is NO art this year at CES, with the budget cuts they saw this year that was a position that was decided wouldn't be replaced when the teacher moved out of district. Mrs Dargent was able to tweak things at the middle school that would allow 4th grade to still receive art this year. So no for 1-3, yes for 4-5.

  17. If I'm not mistaken a big thanks to the volunteer program for helping teachers with art classes. They have offered to set up the art class, help facilitate the teachers art lesson plan, and clean up.

  18. MCAS 3rd grade disappointing, only 56% advanced or proficient in English, 44% need improvement or failure/warning. Math 52% advanced or proficient and 48% need improvement or failure/warning. If I understand this correctly we basically only have 50% of our 3rd grade students on track when they enter the middle school and 4th grade.

  19. Scores will not be going up if we don't give the teachers the resources they need to teach. Supplies, workbooks and equipment are needed. Teachers should not be photocopying entire workbooks because there wasn't money to buy them. It is a waste of time that the teachers could be using to prepare new and challenging lesson plans.

    Thank you to all of the volunteers who help with the copying, but this is too much.

    You can't complain about scores when the schools are not supported. The teachers can only do so much standing in front of a class of kids. If you look at the towns with better scores you will also see the towns who spend more money on their kids.

    1. Money is not the answer if all you do is buy books,supplies,and equipment. You must evaluate and identify your shortfalls and achievements and adapt the curriculum to focus on achievement.
      When we have only in the 50% area of advanced/proficient in 3rd grade. We are missing something other than books. I totally agree if the teachers need things, they should expect to get them, but we need to also know their plan on how this will bring up test scores.

  20. Any news on the evaluation process currently at CES , I am very interested how it is going and if anything is being addressed or noticed.
    would like to see this come out as a good thing, with current shortfalls being addressed and a plan of improvement noted.

  21. Saw in this AM paper -no results for months on this review. Normally you would at least get a short exit interview from reviewers, wonder why this established company does not do that? Seems like alot of money, to get this but you don't even get any feedback so you can start improving immeditately? Just find that strange.

  22. I hear some good things about CES and I also hear that there needs to be changes! I am wondering if anyone has heard anything about the evaluation that went through or is there a copy available. Every place has strengths and weaknesses and I as a parent want to know both!
    I believe that Mrs. Sargent and Mrs. Contreras have both done a good job but it is time for new leadership to come in, an experienced leader who is willing to take the elementary school to the next level! I have watched the SC meetings and I know Mr. Ingano will listen to the committee chosen to interview candidates but in the end it is his sole responsibility and duty to hire the next leader of the elementary school. CES seems to be a good school now is the opportunity to bring in a leader who is qualified and experienced and understands how to work with the whole school district not just one area as a team.
