Communication
In my personal experience with the school system , I feel
that communication is lacking in a lot of areas. I talked about this in depth. I tried to convey that parents want updated
information about everything and in many different ways. I touched on the school district’s website,
newsletters, social media (Facebook), and Olde Home Days.
Mr. Ingano expressed that he will be doing a monthly
newsletter in the Item, and also possibly starting a Facebook page as two new
ways to update everyone.
Marketing
I talked about the marketing aspect of the school. I think that
the school should be showcasing all of the positive things and letting
everyone know all the great things that are going on in the schools. There are always going to be things that
people don’t like, but let’s focus on the positive things. I want to hear about the volunteer program,
and about the recent graduates going to great schools. I want to hear about what’s going on at the
Middle School. Be prideful of the
schools.
I talked about the less than friendly experiences that I’ve
had (and also witnessed) with some of the administration staff. Although these were few and far between, I
know that it’s happened to other people as well. That kind of behavior creates a feeling of
“us versus them” and that’s going to
help no one. It also contributes to the
sense that parents don’t matter or that we shouldn’t “bother” the school. This just can’t happen.
Politics
Politics was the last thing I discussed. This is not my strong suit, so please keep
that in mind. My main points about
politics had to do with the School Committee.
My first question was, why does
it seem that the School Committee doesn’t know the procedure of the Town
Meeting – and how can that change? I
honestly don’t mean this disrespectfully, but I know I’m not the only one who
has asked this question.
This question came about because I was really confused about
the “sandbagging” incident that took place when a member of the finance committee
made a motion to reconsider the town budget, which in turn shut down all
further discussion to re-allocate funds, specifically $300,000 from the
stabilization fund. It was this money that the schools were going to ask for,
but couldn’t because the budget was reconsidered (please correct me if I’m
wrong about this, but this is the way I understood it). Ultimately I can’t figure out why the School
Committee did not anticipate this move by the finance committee.
My other question was why does it seem that the School
Committee, teachers, and superintendent all have the same goal, but don’t seem
to work together?
I had this question because at Town Meeting, I saw Mr.
Ingano speak about the school in response to
a question/comment. I also saw a teacher trying his best to gain more
money for the schools, and I saw a couple of members of the school committee
speak on behalf of the schools. None of
them seemed to work together, which is a shame. I would think that if forces
united, goals might be met more efficiently.
It would also give the schools a better appearance in the eyes of the
town because the situation wouldn’t seem so disorganized and unplanned.
Mr. Ingano didn’t have good explanations for these
questions, other than recognizing it is a problem. I realize that I need to speak to someone on
the School Committee directly about this, but one step at a time.
Wrap Up
So all in all I feel that this meeting was worthwhile. There is still work to do, but I think it’s
a good start. My goal is getting information to the parents and empowering all
of you to voice your opinions and express your thoughts. If enough of us come together, we can
accomplish something.
thank you for your efforts, I appreciate you attempting to address and resolve some of the issues at hand. However I firmly believe that communication is lacking from the schools to the public, I notice you focus just on parents need communication, Yes parents do, but when it comes down to the schools needing an override vote or request additional money it is the vote of the entire town, not just the parents. communication must improve to all if you want to get the vote when it is needed. Alot of citizens in Clinton other than parents of children now attending school, by getting info out to all it also gets that info to people who use school choice. Facebook page, I disagree on that one, Social media facebook can create comments and wrong information to be posted. I believe you need to stick with the school web page and update it consistently.
ReplyDeleteAs for administration and parents communication
I personally feel that should be an easy fix, I never found that an issue in the schools.
Politics: well it was unfortunate at town meeting, but lets face it the school was not getting the money. School committee I believe you might have one person on that committee that does not get it when it comes to the needs of the schools, but I believe you have a couple new members and some prior that back the school and care a great deal and will work to improve our schools. Thank you.
You're right about the communication needing to be for everyone, not just parents. I probably do focus on parents more, because that's my perspective so it's natural for me to draw from that. But the school's involve the entire town, and my true intent is to get information to everyone.
ReplyDeleteThank you for pointing this out to me.
The business manager they hire should also have some PR experience too. That way these issues you have brought up can be addressed by a professional.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the "sandbagging" until the school committee members learn how to work better with the town, and its budget procedures, this will continue to happen. The saying; you attract more bees with honey should be something the school committee practices more.
After just reading that worcester public schools are not accepting school choice this year, it makes me wonder if Clinton will follow. They published the numbers 427 out and only 89 came in, that was the problem. I would love to know what the numbers for Clinton
ReplyDeleteare!
What is there reason why they don't use the "wonderful" school website for communication? People can access that from anywhere(school choice parents, grandparents etc)! They made such a production about this website when it was rolled out and now there are outdated photos/outdated information...or no information at all! We have 2 athletic directors and neither can post any of the sports schedules/locations etc.(at least for CMS)? The website is there and ready to use...why start from scratch with something else?
ReplyDeleteJust accessed school website again ! Still no updates. How is a parent suppose to prepare for school starting, when the student supply list is Last Years (nothing current)middle school site. Also I agree how come nothing on this site regarding sports returning and how to sign up etc for these sports.
ReplyDeleteKudos to the above comments, regarding lack of communication updates. Too bad it appears no one is listening! School supplies looks like parents just guess what the student needs. Middle school sports, well it appears no one thought to communicate to the students and the parents regarding sign up dates. I heard a connect ed call went out, but to date I never got one and no parents I spoke with did either.
ReplyDeleteso who got this call?
Wait until school begins and the sports start...I'd be surprised it they put any athletic schedules or locations on the website(especially at CMS)!
ReplyDeleteThe responsibility of athletic schedules and postings is the responsibility of the two athletic directors. I agree needs to be addressed. If you look at it, the problem appears to be who is accountable for what, and is anyone watching !
