Fighting the Budget Cuts

The schools are facing $1M in budget cuts this year.  This will cause 15 teachers to be eliminated among other things.  Every year there are budget cuts in our school.  Why do we put up with it?  The schools are one of the most important elements of our town.  If the schools are bad, then the town will suffer.  No new families will come here, established families who are invested in Clinton will leave.  This will effect every aspect of our life in town.

We need to come together to stop this.  First we have to get together.  Then we have to come up with solutions.

We have a voice.  We need to use it.  Let's start using our voice here.

  1. I would have no problem with an override IF and WHEN someone puts together a PLAN to help us (and even them) realize how the school system is going to counteract the issues it faces (both budget wise and socially) Every school is facing the same issues. We ARE NO DIFFERENT. Our difference is that its us and them- No one seems to be working together.

The main difference between an override passing in Sudbury and not in Clinton is (imho) COMMUNICATION, INFORMATION, and KNOWLEDGE.

Until the parents (and the taxpayers) feel better that we are not going to be asked every year to overly fund the schools (or the town) any over ride will not pass.

It's not that people don't want to support the schools or the town, But, we want to be informed, feel better about our town government and know that next year we won't be back in the same situation

  2. I agree with the first response. Identify your needs and deficiencies; develop a plan to address these; identify the resources needed over the short and long-term to accomplish your goals; establish performance metrics and accountability; ask for the dough. I can't imagine that the town will not respond in a meaningful and supportive way.
Please don't ask for substantial resources to sustain the status quo; please don't ask for resources to slow down the rate of paddling backwards; please don't point to SPED costs at (nearly) every instance; please don't tell us what you can't do; please tell us what you can do.
